May 2/365 Corn, Part 2

The Rule: water should be boiling before Dad picked any ears. Then we’d run the basket down to the kitchen, where Mom waited, ready to peel back the husks and brush all the silk away. In a good year, there were few corn worms; in a bad one, Mom’s knife cut easily through the cobs.

  1. I have heard of this, worms and all. The closest I have gotten is picking sweet corn from the in-laws farm, driving 10 minutes to my parent’s house, shucking it and plunging it into boiling water.

    • Sweet corn, cooked and eaten shortly after picking is one of the most delicious treats imaginable. Worms are easily disposed of.
